Re: H.R.3096, Vietnam Human Rights Act 2007
Dear Senator Boxer:
I am writing to urge you to support the Vietnam Human Rights Act 2007, H.R.3096, which stipulates that future increases in nonhumanitarian aid to Vietnam would be tied to the Hanoi government’s human rights record. This bill has been passed overwhelmingly in the House of Representatives 414-3.
Ever since Vietnam has joined APEC and been accepted into the WTO, the government has brutally cracked down on political dissidents, pro-democracy activists, religious leaders and common citizens with land grievance issues.
This Bill will hold them accountable for their actions.
We ask that you not only support H.R.3096, but also call on your colleagues to stand with the Vietnamese people and pass this bill. Together, we will send a strong message to Vietnam’s government that, as they integrate into the world community, they must adhere to international standards of human rights and respect the rule of law.
